Onekama and the Gateway to M-22

Onekama and its neighbor to the north, Arcadia, are the Gateways to M-22, a corridor of Lake Michigan beaches, inland lakes, rich agriculture, sand dunes and distinctive options for shopping, dining, boating, fishing, lodging and golfing. Onekama’s Portage Lake and Arcadia Lake offer spectacular, four-season angling opportunities as well as access to Lake Michigan for anglers and sailors.

There are 28 farms in Onekama and Arcadia Townships and 24 orchards, many with roadside stands and U-Pick operations. Locally grown fresh fruits include apples, cherries, peaches, pears, blueberries and strawberries. Apple Valley Orchards grows 19 apple varieties! Lineback’s in Onekama on M-22 and nearby Douglas Valley Organic Winery offer wine tasting. Other products such as honey, maple syrup, asparagus and tomatoes are available along with locally produced jams, jellies, dressings and pies. And, while you’re in Onekama, don’t forget to stop at MacBeth & Co. on the corner of M-22 and 8 Mile Road for a distinctive shopping treasure trove!

Available recreation options range from first-class private marinas to public boat launches to small parks for picnics, reunions, swimming, fishing and watching the wonders of nature along the coastal lake shores. Visitors can choose from among 11 lodging facilities, including the Little River Casino and Resort’s ultra-modern accommodations and packages to quaint, historic inns, small motels or Bed and Breakfasts. You can explore the Manistee National Forest and its many miles of rivers, streams, inland lakes, trails, forests and wetlands.

Arcadia is also the gateway to the spectacular coastal dunes and expansive Arcadia Marsh, both world-class destinations for hikers, nature lovers and bird watchers. For cyclists, M-22 offers spectacular vistas and the challenging hills of Michigan dune country. Golfers around the world travel to Arcadia and Onekama to play the stunning courses and to explore the specialty shops, restaurants and art studios which are among the best Michigan has to offer.
